Man killed when SUV crashes into Wauconda retention pond

A man died Wednesday when his SUV left the roadway in Wauconda and went into a retention pond, according to police.

The identity of the man, who was 38, has not been released by authorities.

According to Wauconda police, the man was northbound on Main Street at 10:24 a.m. when his Ford Edge struck the curb at Garland Street. The vehicle then landed upside down in a retention pond.

Police and firefighters responded and were able to extricate the man within about 10 minutes. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. As a precaution, divers searched the pond for other potential victims.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wauconda police and the Major Crash Assistance Team.
