Man released in connection with fatal highway shooting

The Indiana State Police have released a man they arrested in connection with a road rage incident early Wednesday morning that resulted in the shooting death of a Chesterton man.

ISP spokesman Sgt. Glen Fifield said in a Friday release that no other details can be released at this point other than to say the investigation is ongoing. The Lake County Coroner’s office, meanwhile, has ruled the death of the victim — 55-year-old Mark Brant — a homicide.

Fifield said that at around 4 a.m. March 6, a man called ISP and said he’d been involved in a road rage incident on westbound I-80/94, the Post-Tribune previously reported. The caller stopped his vehicle at on I-65 near 61st Avenue, approximately two miles south.

As the caller was on with dispatch, others called in a single-vehicle crash at the 12.8-mile marker in Lake Station, Fifield said.

Troopers who arrived at the crash scene attempted to give the victim first aid but saw that he had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, Fifield said. The man, who was the only person in the vehicle, died as a result, he said.

The caller later told troopers who responded to him what happened, and he was taken into custody at the Lake County Jail on a probable cause hold, Fifield said.

The Lake Station Police, Fire and EMS, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, INDOT, Purkey’s Towing and WAFFCO Towing assisted.
