Memorial Day events being held in the Elgin-area over holiday weekend

There are several Memorial Day ceremonies in and around the Elgin area this weekend:

Carpentersville

The village of Carpentersville will hold a wreath laying ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26 at Veterans Garden in Carpenter Park, 275 Maple Ave. For more information, call 847-426-3439.

East Dundee

The James McCulla Jr. Memorial fireworks show is scheduled to take place at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, May 24, with displays shot off from the footbridge over the Fox River between East and West Dundee. For more information, email dundeestpats@gmail.com.

Elgin

The Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association will be presenting four events on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26:

  • A Catholic Mass followed by a ceremony commemorating the fallen will be held at 8:30 a.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa St.
  • A service including with a rifle salute and the playing of taps will be held at 9 a.m. in the Garden of Honor at Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 Route 20.
  • The Elgin Navy Club and the Elgin Marine Corps League will pay tribute to veterans interred at sea with a program at 9:40 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Park, 274 N. Grove Ave.
  • Elgin’s largest Memorial Day commemoration will be held at 11 a.m. at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd. This year’s program will pay tribute to the 75th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Elgin Master Chorale and the Larkin High School Band will perform, and students from the Fox Valley Young Marines will read Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Gen. John Logan’s Orders establishing Memorial Day. Wreaths will be placed at the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial and a roll call of deceased veterans read followed by a rifle salute and the playing of taps.

Willow Lakes Estates subdivision off West River Road in Elgin will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m Saturday, May 24, in the lower level of its clubhouse. The ceremony will feature local dignitaries and a benediction from Elgin Police Department chaplain Al Keating. For more information, email rerussell1862@msn.com.

West Dundee

VFW Post 2298 will unveil a new memorial at a ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, outside its building at 117 S. 1st St. An invocation will be made by the Rev. John McNamara of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and the keynote address will be made by VFW state Cmdr. Maurice Bridges. For more information, call 847-428-9006.
