Merrillville woman charged after speeding at 125 MPH on I-65

A Merrillville woman is facing felony charges after she allegedly drove 125 miles per hour on Interstate 65, then blew twice the legal limit on a breathalyzer.

Mariana Martinez, 25, was charged Feb. 16 with neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony, operating while intoxicated, a Level 6 felony, and five misdemeanors.

She was arrested and is being held for now without bail. A court appearance was scheduled Tuesday.

A Hobart Police patrolman said he was on his way to backup another officer on I-65 north at 11:59 p.m. Feb. 14 on a traffic stop when a Chevrolet SUV passed him.

He chased it at 125 miles per hour and pulled it over near the I-80 exit. It partially pulled over on the shoulder.

Both Martinez and her male passenger appeared to have bloodshot eyes. Her son, 5, was in the backseat. She said they left BJ’s Brewhouse in Merrillville.

She said they were headed to her relative’s for an “emergency.” She said they were celebrating Valentine’s Day. She said she had one drink and was surprised she was driving so fast.

Martinez blew a 0.164% blood-alcohol level, twice the legal limit, according to the affidavit. The man blew a 0.13%.

She was “crying” and “angry”, asking the cop for a “favor” to let them go. She was taken to Hobart City Jail and a relative picked up the boy.
