Methodist settles lawsuit with woman raped by nurse

Methodist Hospitals settled a lawsuit last month filed by a woman raped in January 2021 by a traveling nurse, court records show.

The terms were not disclosed.

Timothy Jackson, 55, of Gary, was sentenced to seven years in prison in January 2024 after pleading guilty to rape. His earlier release date is in April 2029.

Court records show the woman went to Methodist Northlake in Gary after a car wreck that left her with several broken bones, including a right leg, arm, left arm, fractured rib and punctured lung.

Filings show Jackson withheld pain medication until she — screaming in agony — submitted to a sex act, then stopped resisting him, so he could rape her.

He targeted her thinking “because of who I am, no one would believe me,” she wrote in a letter read at Jackson’s sentencing. Both the victim and a prosecutor said nurses on her floor didn’t believe her.

After she reported the rape, she left the hospital a couple days after the crash with several unhealed injuries. She was left with profound physical pain and deep psychological trauma, the lawsuit states.

Methodist did not immediately respond to a request for comment, including questions on any changes to background checks or staffing procedures.

Jackson’s nursing license was suspended in May 2021, state records show.

The woman, listed as Jane Doe, filed the civil lawsuit in January 2023 against Jackson and a trio of anonymous medical providers, including Methodist and OneStaff Medical, the agency that employed him at the time.

DNA from the victim’s rape kit matched Jackson, records state.
