Mom gets 7 years for dealing meth after son jailed

A Hammond woman was sentenced to seven years Wednesday in a plea deal for taking over selling meth after her son was jailed for it.

Debra Moore, 54, pleaded guilty in November in the U.S. District Court in Hammond to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribute a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine.

She will serve three years on supervised release after prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Toth asked for just over 10 years in court filings.

Defense lawyer Susan Severtson wrote Moore sold the drugs after her son was jailed in Porter County to help raise bail money.

Moore was arrested at a Schererville motel with meth, a scale and bags.

The case was before U.S. District Judge Gretchen Lund.

Her son, Erik Grant, got 14 years in December.
