More snow, subzero wind chills in store for Chicago area

The Chicago area could see 1 to 3 more inches of snow through Saturday night, with “bitterly cold temperatures” and subzero wind chills in the forecast for the coming week, according to the National Weather Service.

There’s a 50% chance of snow beginning around 11 a.m., with more snow expected Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Areas south of Interstate 80 may also see a wintery mix Saturday afternoon and evening. Accumulation is most likely to occur in northwest Indiana due to lake effect snow services, the weather service said.

Saturday’s high in Chicago is expected to reach 34 degrees before temperatures begin dropping into the single digits Sunday night.

During the upcoming week, the weather service warned of early morning windchills of 10 to 20 degrees below zero.

In Chicago, the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication is reminding residents that its network of about 200 warming centers, including public library and park facilities, are open during regular business hours, though some locations will be closed Monday for Presidents Day.

The Garfield Community Service Center, 10 S. Kedzie Ave., will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and Lincoln Park Community Services, 1521 N. Sedgwick St., will be open 11a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

A map of warming centers is available here, and residents also can call 311 for information on locations and hours.

The city’s overnight parking ban, from 3 to 7 a.m. on designated streets, remains in effect. More information is available here.
