More than 500 Afghans likely to resettle in Chicago area

More than 500 Afghans are expected to resettle in the Chicago area in the weeks and months ahead, a coalition of Illinois refugee organizations said Monday. While refugees and special immigrant visa recipients are eligible for public benefits, Afghans arriving under “humanitarian parole” status do not currently have access to the same social safety net programs, advocates say. RefugeeOne, World Relief and about two dozen other organizations called for a legislative fix.
