Motorcyclist dies in Aurora crash

A motorcyclist from DeKalb died Friday evening in a two-vehicle crash in Aurora, police announced on Saturday.

Christopher Joeckel, 48, suffered serious injuries during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by law enforcement, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

While the investigation is still ongoing, officials said it appears that Joeckel ran into the side of a 2009 Nissan Versa with his 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle, according to the release.

The intersection of North Orchard Road and Sullivan Road, the scene of the crash, was closed for several hours on Friday evening while traffic investigators reconstructed the incident, officials said.

The initial investigation indicates that, at around 6:45 p.m., the Nissan was traveling northbound on Orchard Road and attempted to make a left turn onto Sullivan Road, according to the news release.

Officials said the motorcycle was traveling southbound on Orchard Road and was unable to stop while the Nissan was turning, so it struck the passenger side of the car.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office is working to determine the exact cause and manner of death, according to the release.

The Aurora Police Department Traffic Division and Aurora’s Emergency Management Agency responded to the scene, officials said.

The crash is still under investigation by the Traffic Division, so officials are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 630-256-5330 or email tips@aurora.il.us.
