Mundelein man faces gun and obstruction charges in fatal shooting

A man is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting this week of a man in a Mundelein parking lot.

Joaquin Romero, 20, of the 900 block of Lake Street in Mundelein, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and obstructing justice, authorities said.

The charges stem from the Monday evening shooting in which Luis Moreno, 21, of Wheeling was killed.

Police said they were called to a parking lot in the 700 block of South Lake Street at around 7:10 p.m. for reports of gunfire. However, by the time police arrived, Moreno was gone. Police say he was brought to Advocate Condell Medical Center in a private vehicle, and whoever transported him did not remain at the hospital.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force said Wednesday that investigators had located the vehicle that was believed to have been used in the shooting, and alleged that Romero was in the vehicle when Moreno was shot.

Romero, police say, possessed the gun used in the shooting and then hid the weapon. He was arrested Tuesday without incident in Round Lake, the task force said.

The shooting remains under investigation by Mundelein police and the task force.
