Munster pipeline leak shuts bike path

The Munster Fire Department is urging bikers and pedestrians who use the bike path between Columbia and Greenwood avenues to steer clear due to a pipeline leak.

The pipeline’s owner, Wolverine Pipe Line Company out of Portage, Michigan, shut down the petroleum product-carrying Lockport to Kennedy Avenue 16-inch pipeline on Feb. 1 after a smell was reported, according to a release from the company. No injuries were reported, and workers have been responding to the incident since, the release said.

The inspection site is located on the east side of Columbia Avenue at the intersection with Fisher Street, extending eastward into the grassy area, the release said.

“Wolverine Pipe Line Company’s top priority remains the safety of the community, the first responders, the environment, its employees and contractors,” said company spokeswoman Jenell Leonard. “We ask everyone to avoid the affected area until further notice.”
