Murder charges filed in Friday killing of East Chicago teen

Murder charges have been filed against a 16-year-old boy in the fatal shooting of an East Chicago teen late Friday morning.

Around 11:16 a.m., East Chicago Police officers responded to a residence in the 3700 block of Dahlia Street in reference to a report of shots fired, according to a news release. Shot Spotter indicated that eight rounds were fired in the area.

While searching the area, officers found a 17-year-old boy down in the area of the 3800 block of Erie Ct. and Commonwealth in Lake Side Gardens Apartments, police said. The victim was unresponsive and pronounced deceased on scene by responding medics.

The Lake County Coroner’s office identified the teen as Justin Charleston, 17, of the 3800 block of Ontario Court, the release said.

The office will perform a forensic autopsy on Monday, according to the coroner.

On Saturday, detectives from the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force filed charges against the 16-year-old juvenile, who turned himself into detectives with his attorney.

The East Chicago Police Department, East Chicago Fire Department, Superior Ambulance, and Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force assisted.
