Naperville, DuPage holding Memorial Day events, including downtown parade Monday

Memorial Day events in the Naperville area will include several observances at area military monuments/memorials and a downtown parade Monday followed by a ceremony in Naperville’s Central Park.

Naperville observances

  • 7:45 a.m., Cmdr. Dan Shanower 9/11 Memorial outside the Naperville Municipal Center at 400 S. Eagle St.;
  • 8:15 a.m., G.A.R. Monument in Naperville Cemetery, 705 S. Washington St.;
  • 8:35 a.m., Veterans Park, 303 E. Gartner Road;
  • 9 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, 911 North Ave.;
  • 9:25 a.m., Burlington Square Doughboy Monument, 307 N. Ellsworth St.

Memorial Day Parade

The annual Memorial Day Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. organized by the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 and American Legion Post 43.

The parade route goes from Jackson Avenue and West Street east along Jackson to Main Street, north to Benton Avenue and east to Ellsworth Street.

After the parade ends at about noon, an observance ceremony will take place at the Community Concert Center in Central Park featuring guest speakers and a musical tribute from the Naperville Municipal Band.

Community members are asked to observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m. to recognize the military veterans who lost their lives during service, including the 114 Naperville residents who died while on active duty.

DuPage County ceremony

DuPage County’s Memorial Day observance is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, at the Veterans Memorial outside the DuPage County Government Complex, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton.

The event will include the laying of a wreath by Gold Star families; a weapons salute by the DuPage Honor Guard, which also will retire the colors.

Guests should park in the south parking lot of the 421 Administration Building. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the atrium of the 421 building.
