Mandala South Asian Performing Arts coming to Madden

Mandala South Asian Performing Arts will hold a free performance featuring musicians Sonny with Riyaaz Qawwali and Seaux Chill from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the Madden Theatre, 171 Chicago Ave., Naperville.

“At Crossroads, Qawwali and Gospel” integrates Black American gospel music with South Asian Qawwali, a devotional musical tradition with roots in Sufi Islam, a news release said. The music highlights the parallels between the two genres while also celebrating their distinct historic roots.

The program expands on work that was supported by a 2023 Joyce Award, which helps fund the creation of innovative and community-driven new works by artists of color in partnership with cultural organizations in the Great Lakes region.

With the support from the city of Naperville’s Special Events Community Arts funds, “we can continue to build bridges and deepen understanding between different Chicago communities,” Pranita Nayar, Mandala executive artistic director, said in a statement.

Registration is recommended. Go to eventcombo.com/e/at-crossroads-qawwali–gospel-72699.
