Naperville News Digest: Council OKs landmark status for Beidelman Furniture; Theater for Charity presents benefit production of ‘Joseph’; All Hallows Eve, Howlin’ at the Moon tickets now on sale

Council approves landmark status for Beidelman Furniture

The Naperville City Council has granted historic landmark status to the longtime downtown buildings owned by Beidelman Furniture.

Last month, Naperville Historic Preservation Commission members recommended that the company’s properties, which together represent the business’ 163-year history in the city, be landmarked by the city council.

Council members OK’d the designation as part of a long list of consent agenda items up for approval at their meeting Tuesday.

The buildings receiving landmark status are Beidelman’s current storefront at 239 S. Washington St., which was built in 1928, and a structure next door that dates back to the business’ founding in 1861.

The designation places the Beidelman buildings under the jurisdiction of Naperville’s zoning code for historic preservation, meaning that future changes sought for the properties’ exteriors would be subject to city review and approval.

Theater for Charity presents benefit production of ‘Joseph’

Theater for Charity will perform “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” Sept. 20-22 and Sept. 27-29 at the Yellowbox Theater, 1635 Emerson Lane, Naperville.

The Friday and Saturday shows will start at 7 p.m. and a matinee performance is set for 3 p.m. each Sunday.

A retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph, the musical will feature a cast and crew from Naperville, Aurora, Downers Grove, Lisle and other nearby communities.

The Theater for Charity, established in 2006, donates all profits from its productions to a charitable organization. This season the show and a raffle will benefit A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter, a no-kill, nonprofit animal shelter in Naperville.

Tickets purchased in advance are $25, with a $5 discount for senior citizens. Tickets purchased at the door cost $5 more. Only 200 tickets are available per show, organizers said.
