Downtown tulip bulbs to be given away Wednesday morning

The tulip bulbs from this spring’s downtown flowers will be given away while supplies last from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, on Main Street between Van Buren and Benton avenues.

Bulbs are free, but donations will be accepted to benefit The Alive Center, an award-winning nonprofit program to help teens learn life and leadership skills.

Those interested can pick their own bulbs or bags of up to 24 bulbs per person will be available.

The tulip bulb program is being offered with the help of the Naperville Public Works and the Naperville Park District.

Should it rain Wednesday, the distribution will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6.

Longtime educator chosen to serve as interim COD president

Christine Hammond, a longtime educator, has been chosen through a national search process to serve as interim president of the College of DuPage while a successor for retiring President Brian Caputo is sought.

COD officials said a news release that Hammond, who will assume the job July 1, will provide leadership stablity while the search process is underway.

The community can offer its feedback on the search until June 30 by going to cod.edu/presidential-search.

Hammond has more than 40 years of experience in higher education. Recently, she served as president of Mid Michigan College until she retired in 2020, the release said. Following her retirement, she held two interim leadership positions through The Registry organization.

Hammond previously was chief academic officer for Northern Central Michigan College; executive director of administration at Michigan State University’s College of Law; and senior project coordinator for Michigan State’s Dubai initiative, the release said.

She has a doctorate degree in higher education administration from Michigan State University.

LWV to host discussion on handling political disagreements

A free Zoom discussion on how to talk with people with whom you disagree politically will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, by the League of Women Voters of Illinois’ Mis/Disinformation Task Force.

Gina M. Masullo, associate director of the Center for Media Engagement and an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin, will lead the discussion. She is the author of “Online Incivility and Public Debate: Nasty Talk” and “The New Town Hall: Why We Engage Personally with Politicians” and co-editor of “Scandal in a Digital Age.”

The program is part of a series of events sponsored by the League of Women Voters about relevant topics leading up to the Nov. 5 presidential election.
