Naperville News Digest: First human case of West Nile virus reported in Will County; annual Long Table Dinner on Water Street to be held Sept. 22

First human case of West Nile virus reported in Will County

A Will County resident in their 70s is the first person in the county confirmed to have West Nile virus this year, according to the Will County Health Department.

No town or information about the patient was released other than they began developing symptoms in July, a county news release said.

So far there have been five human cases of West Nile virus in Illinois, including three people in Cook County, Illinois Department of Public Health officials said. Last year, there were 119 human cases.

Ten Will County communities have had mosquito batches test positive for the virus. Locations include Joliet, Homer Glen, Shorewood, Lockport, Manhattan, New Lenox, Bolingbrook, Mokena, Frankfort and Plainfield. A dead bird tested positive for the virus in Crest Hill, county officials said.

In Illinois, 53 counties have reported positive cases of West Nile virus in mosquito batches and birds.

West Nile virus typically causes mild, flu-like symptoms, the health department said. About 80% of those infected do not develop any symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, about 20% will develop a fever and symptoms such as a headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.
