General registration opens next week for Camp Naper

Naper Settlement’s summer day camp programs, which offer hands-on activities in history, STEM, art and other subjects, will be open for registration to the general public starting Monday.

The camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2 to Aug. 8. Parents can drop off their children at 8 a.m. for no additional cost.

Naper Settlement members can register now before it opens to others on Monday, Feb. 3, a news release said.

Among the options are Animal Kingdom Camp, which teaches participants about ecosystems, and Robotics Camp, where design, code and problem-solving skills are used, the release said.

Other camps cover topics like ocean and marine science, pioneer and frontier life, and architecture. Most camps are geared towards children in first through sixth grades, with some topics split into a younger and older sections, the release said.

Sew Cool Camp is designed for middle and high school students and focuses on sewing, crafting and design.

Metea Valley HS students to present ‘Winter Scenes’

The Metea Valley High School theater production “Winter Scenes,” a series of student-directed one-act shows, will be presented in February.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 13-15 and 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at the school’s Black Box Theater, 1801 N. Eola Road, Aurora.

General admission is $10, and students and senior tickets cost $5. Seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and the audience is asked to arrive at least 15 minutes before showtimes at Door 5.

This year’s selections include “The Boy and His Poems,” written and directed by Aditi Puntambekar and Alli Jacobson; “Slam Sensation,” written and directed by Nevaeh Maxey and Ciniyah Young; and “The New Margo,” written by Stephen Gregg and directed by Loren Jones.

Naperville Park District recognized at state parks conference

The Naperville Park District received several awards at a conference hosted by the Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Park and Recreation Association.

Leslie Ruffing, vice president of the Naperville Park Board, was presented with the Master Board Member Award, which is the highest level of the association’s board member development program, a park district news release said.

Members who achieve the recognition participate in educational opportunities, serve on committees, attend events, and achieve various distinctions at the local, state and national levels, the release said.

Stacey Fontechia, park district sales and sponsorship manager, received the Rising Star Award for Communications and Marketing.

The Rothermel Family Skate Facility was given the Outstanding Facility Award, which recognizes unique achievements in the design and development of new or renovated recreation facilities, the release said.
