Fort Hill Wellness Series program to discuss sleep issues

Two doctors from Advocate Good Samaritan will talk about healthy sleep and sleep disorders as .

“Healthy Sleep and Obstructive Sleep Apnea,” part of the Naperville Park District’s Fort Hill Wellness Series, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Fort Hill Activity Center, 20 Fort Hill Dr.

Drs. Ryan Smith and Dr. Puja Sethi, affiliated with Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, will discuss sleep topics, including untreated sleep apnea and current treatment options for sleep apnea, a park district news release said.

Healthy sleep supports proper brain function, improves physical health, strengthens the immune system and lowers the risk of of serious health issues, the release said.

The presentation is for those 15 and older, and is free for Fort Hill members and $5 for nonmembers. Registration fo all attendees is required. Members can sign up at the activity center or by calling 630-995-8900. Nonmembers should register at www.napervilleparks.org.

Local students earn honors at YMCA judicial competition

Several local students won honors at the 2024 YMCA National Judicial Competition held this summer in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Akshara Arvind and Mannsha Assudani from Waubonsie Valley High School were named 2024 National Judicial Competition Champions from among teams across the county. They demonstrated superior legal acumen and had an outstanding performance in appellate court simulations, a news release from Illinois YMCA Youth and Government said.

Nina Rao, a Naperville Central High School student, was recognized as Best Attorney for an exceptional courtroom presence and persuasive arguments, the release said.

The competition brings together participants from YMCA Youth and Government programs across the county to engage in simulations of trial and appellate court proceedings. This year’s competition featured more than 300 participants from 17 states.

Naperville Park District announces Labor Day holiday hours

The Naperville Park District has set holiday hours for some of its facilities over Labor Day weekend. Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

  • Springbrook and Naperbrook golf courses and Sportsman’s Park Trapshooting Range will have regular hours.
  • The Paddleboat Quarry on the Fox River off the Riverwalk will operate from 10 a.m. to dusk throughout the weekend.
  • Fort Hill Activity Center will have regular hours Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and will be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2.
  • Knoch Knolls Nature Center will have regular hours Saturday and will be closed Sunday and Monday.
  • Centennial Beach will be open for adult float from 9 to 10:55 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Monday float is for members only). Open swim hours are 11 a.m. to dusk Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday, which is the pool’s final day for the season.
  • Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center all three weekend days.
  • Rubin commmunity center and Park District Administration Center parking lots will be closed starting at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, because of the Naperville Jaycee’s Last Fling festival. They will open Tuesday, Sept. 3.

College of DuPage offering new Media Literacy certificate

College of DuPage has introduced a new Media Literacy, Journalism and Production Certificate that students can complete while concurrently earning credit towards their associate degree in digital broadcast journalism.

The Illinois Community College Board recently approved the 21-credit hour certificate to prepare students for various roles in media, broadcast journalism and news production. Students will learn how to discern fake news and acquire such skills as podcasting, news gathering, advertising, and on-camera and behind-the-scenes production, a news release said.

A digital broadcast journalism associate of arts degrees requires 64 credits.

“This certificate is a crucial step for those preparing to navigate and shape the future of media,” Brian Carlson, the college’s dean of arts, communication and hospitality, said in a statement. “In a world inundated with mass communication through smartphones, television, radio and podcasts, media literacy is not just an asset but a necessity across various fields.”
