Parking deck maintenance work underway through October
Maintenance work on the upper level of Naperville’s Municipal Center Parking Deck, 400 S. Eagle St., and the Van Buren Parking Deck, 43 W. Van Buren Ave., has started will continue through the end of October.
Improvements to the municipal denter deck include concrete surface repairs, ADA sidewalk repairs and joint sealing, a city news release said.
The east side of the deck’s upper level will be closed for work that will take about four weeks. When complete, crews will move to the west side of the upper level to do the same improvements, officials said. No parking will be available where work is being done done, officials said.
Entrances from both Eagle and Webster streets will remain open at most times, but isolated closures may occur. If visitors cannot find parking there, they can use the Water Street Parking Facility, 120 S. Water St., the release said.
At the Van Buren Parking Deck, work will include power washing, concrete repairs and touch-up painting. It will begin this week on the fifth level and some areas will be closed, officials said.
While most work will take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays, some may be done overnight. The project is expected to take two to three weeks.
Will County to host “Lunch and Learn” emergency webinars
The Will County Emergency Management Agency will host a series of free, 30-minute “Lunch and Learn” webinars as part of National Preparedness Month.
Each will take place from noon to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays in September and will provide practical information for responding to unexpected situations, a news release said.
On Sept. 11, pet owners can learn how to prepare their animals for an emergency, including natural disasters.
Nuclear safety is the featured topic Sept. 18. With two nuclear power plants in Will County or on its border, residents can learn about how the plants operate and how to receive emergency alerts, officials said.
The program wraps up Sept. 25 with a session focusing on financial preparedness should you experience an unexpected expense or a catastrophic weather event.

Sanitary sewer system smoke testing to start Monday
The city of Naperville will begin smoke testing its sanitary sewer system the week of Sept. 9 in several downtown Naperville neighborhoods.
During the tests, air combined with a nontoxic smoke is forced into sewer lines. Crews will see smoke coming out of the ground where there are defects, a news release said.
Smoke testing helps prevent expensive sanitary sewer backups. The smoke is harmless, leaves no residue and dissipates quickly, but individuals who have respiratory issues may want to leave the area for a few hours until testing is complete, officials said.
Smoke will not enter buildings unless there is defective plumbing or dried-up drain traps.
Residents will be notified of the testing through door hangers and there will signs at set up at nearby intersections, the release said. Testing is expected to be completed by the end of October.
