Alfred Rubin community center improvements start next week
Work to upgrade the heating and cooling system at the Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center, 305 Jackson Ave., will start Monday, July 22, and is expected to continue through Aug. 23, Naperville Park District officials said.
The center and its parking lot will be closed on Wednesday, July 24.
Some drop-in activities and programs will be canceled or relocated, with patrons of affected programs notified by phone and email, a news release said.
Residents can also check the district’s website for updates on closures at napervilleparks.org/cancellations.
Neuqua Valley Students awarded National Merit Scholarships
Two graduates of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville are among the latest winners of National Merit Scholarships.
Naperville resident Serene R. Bose and Bolingbrook resident Aadi Pandit both received a National Merit Case Western Reserve University scholarship, a news release from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. said.
Bose plans to study medicine. Pandit plans to pursue a career in biochemistry.
The final group of scholarship winners brings the total number of 2024 National Merit Scholars to more than 6,900. They will share in an estimated $26 million available in undergraduate funding.
In the competition, students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2022, which served as a screening. In September 2023, more than 16,000 students nationwide were named semifinalists.
Further narrowing was done after students submitted essays, described their leadership positions and contributions to their school and community, provided proof of an outstanding academic record and were endorsed by a high school official.

Naperville ranked no. 15 in Illinois for 2023 DUI busts, AAIM says
Naperville police were 15th in the state for the number of drunken driving arrests made in 2023, according to an annual survey released by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.
The Aurora Police Department’s 366 DUI arrests, a 12.6% increase from 2022, placed it in the top slot for intoxicated driver cases, survey data showed.
Naperville’s 179 sworn officers made 170 arrests last year.
In Illinois, 12 municipal police departments other than Chicago, which has its own category because its area and population is so large, made more than 200 drunken driving arrests last year. Only the Aurora made more than 300.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office made 186 arrests, making it the no. 4 office in the state for DUI busts made by county law enforcement agencies. DuPage County made 77, putting it at no. 18, numbers show.
Winnebago County in the Rockford area was no. 1 in the state for its 526 arrests.
