DuPage County mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus
A batch of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in Bartlett on June 18 and Wood Dale on June 27, according to the DuPage County Health Department.
DuPage health officials urge residents to exercise caution and protect themselves from mosquito bites. While there have been no human cases, positive mosquito pools are associated with an increased in individuals contracting West Nile virus.
Residents should drain items that collect standing water around their homes and when outdoors, they should use an insect repellant in the hours between dusk and dawn, which is prime time for mosquito activity, and wear long pants, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes, a news release said.
The county offers a real-time snapshot of West Nile virus activity on its website, www.dupagehealth.org/243/Personal-Protection-Index.
There is a risk ranking system from zero, meaning no risk, to three, which is a high level of risk and multiple confirmed human cases. The county’s current risk level is a one, officials said in the release.
