A 23-year-old from Gary, Indiana, was arrested last weekend for having a firearm inside his car while parked at Topgolf in Naperville — the 25th firearm-related offense outside the venue since August 2023, authorities said.
Jayson Daniel Patrick Kimble was taken into custody about 11:10 p.m. Sunday at Topgolf’s Odyssey Court lot on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a class 4 felony.
An officer doing a foot patrol of the lot “observed a handgun with an extended magazine in plain view in the back map compartment of the front passenger’s seat,” Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow said. Four people later returned to the vehicle, at which time they were detained and Kimble arrested, he said.
He also was charged with illegal transportation of cannabis by a passenger, Krakow said. According to DuPage County Circuit Court records, Kimble “unlawfully possessed cannabis in knotted sandwich baggies other than is outlined in statutory guidelines.”
Kimble’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 4.
Consistently making headlines for more than a year now, the trend of people bringing guns into the Topgolf lot was first observed in August 2023. Since then, Naperville police have been routinely doing foot patrols around the business and making arrests for illegal gun possession, among other offenses.
Most recently, Demonte G. Dennis, 24, of Calumet Park, in late August was arrested in the lot on one charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Two weeks earlier, Courtney Bennett, 36, of Dolton, was arrested Aug. 18 for allegedly driving into the lot with open alcohol, cannabis and a loaded gun.
As of Thursday, 23 of the 25 reported cases of firearm-related arrests outside Naperville’s Topgolf facility over the past 14 months were still in court.
