New security measures in place at Naperville Municipal Center

Naperville is implementing new security measures at its 400 S. Eagle St. municipal center.

Effective as of Nov. 12, visitors must check in with a security guard before proceeding into the building.

“We take the safety and security of our employees and visitors very seriously,” Naperville City Manager Doug Krieger said in a news release. “Since 2020, we’ve steadily added security improvements, and the goal is to balance safety with a welcoming experience. These new security procedures will increase safety and make it easier to navigate the building.”

The Naperville Municipal Center — which houses Naperville City Council chambers, public meeting rooms, several city departments and various assistance counters for services from utility bill payments to permit filings — is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

With new measures in place, visitors entering the municipal center during regular hours will need first to stop by a visitors services desk. There, a security guard will greet visitors, verify appointments and provide directions inside.

Visitors will not be required to show identification, sign-in or pass through a metal detector.

Those arriving without an appointment will receive assistance from the guard, who will try to connect visitors with the appropriate department, pending city staff availability. If walk-ins cannot be accommodated, visitors will receive contact information to follow up and schedule an appointment.

For city meetings held at the municipal center, building access procedures will depend on meeting times.

For meetings that require access before 8 a.m., instructions will be provided to visitors for how to get inside the building. During regular hours of operation, the guard will direct visitors to the correct meeting room.

The municipal center’s main entrance will remain open through the duration of any meetings that take place after 5 p.m. For evening meetings, attendees will be allowed to enter and exit without check-in requirements, though security personnel will be available.

Anyone using the municipal center for outside meetings — community groups or organizations, for instance — can assign a greeter to assist visitors when they enter the building or they can provide security with an attendee list.
