Niles bank on Dempster Street robbed Wednesday, police say

A man wearing a COVID-type mask and a backpack is at large after robbing a bank in Niles on Wednesday, Niles police said.

Niles police responded to a bank robbery at the U.S. Bank at 8500 W. Dempster Street at 9:10 a.m., police said in a news release. The suspect entered the bank, pointed what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun at bank employees, and demanded money. The suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No injuries were reported during the incident. Area schools were on lockdown during the incident and the search for the suspect.

No other information was released. Niles police said they turned the case over to the FBI for further investigation.
