Nineteen evaluated at hospitals after Lake County inmate transport van crash; no one seriously injured, police say

A transport van hauling jail inmates to McHenry County was involved in an accident Wednesday afternoon with another vehicle in Grayslake, police said.

The collision happened shortly before 1 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois Route 120 and Hainesville Road.

Police said the transport van was headed west on Illinois Route 120 when it came into contact with a vehicle attempting to turn onto northbound Hainesville Road from eastbound Route 120.

There were no reports of serious injuries, and the 16 prisoners on the bus were all accounted for, Grayslake Police Chief Jeff Myhra said. However, 19 people were taken to hospitals for evaluation, which prompted requests from nearby fire departments for additional ambulance support.

Police said traffic at the intersection was affected for a short period of time. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
