Northbrook puts on the dog for Halloween pet parade

Surrounded by the vibrant colors of fall, area pets and their humans gathered at Northbrook’s Techny Prairie Park and Fields for a costume-clad autumn day.

This was the third year the Northbrook Park District hosted the Halloween Pet Parade and costume contest, which took place on Oct. 25, from 5 to 6 p.m.

“This event is growing every year and brings everybody out for a leashed Halloween Pet Parade, giving pets and their owners the chance to celebrate the season together,” said Matt Papale, recreation supervisor at the park district.

The pet parade gives people a chance to dress their  pets in a costume, meet and mingle with other pet owners, compete for a best costume prize basket full of treats and toys, and interact with local pet industry experts to learn about community-based products and services.

“This is such a great community event, and isn’t it fun to have a chance to show off your pets, cheer for the best costume, and meet members of the pet industry that can provide boarding, veterinary and nutritional services for your pet,” said Scott Jones, owner of Northbrook Animal Clinic.

The parade took off at about 5:10 p.m. as over 100 participants made their way down the short street in back of the Techny circle loop.

The parade was followed by a costume contest, where judges Sue Block and Penny Sanchez selected costume winners in three categories: best look-alike pet, best pet and owner combo costume, and spookiest animal costume.

Parade participants received pet sponsor giveaways and many take-home goodies, while contest winners received baskets filled with toys, pet treats, a water bowl, a Frisbee and more.

Papale said they don’t really have many pet events in Northbrook.

“We thought this was a cool idea that could also support our Northbrook Park District Dog Park at Coast Guard Park at 2490 Dundee Road, and its members,” Papale said.

“There are not many opportunities like this around. Ace and I especially like the meet and greet, and the chance to meet new friends,” Martinez said.
