Northbrook’s Autumnfest Saturday to feature horses, pumpkin chucking, taffy apples

Fans of all things autumn can take their pick of fall events at the Northbrook Park District’s Autumnfest, taking place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Meadowhill Park.

The day’s activities will include a pumpkin patch, toasted marshmallows by a bonfire, a horse-drawn trolley, a petting zoo, bouncy houses and DJ entertainment.

The Landmark Inn Bar & Grille will sell cider and adult-beverage cider throughout the day and the park district will sell taffy apples.

Families can visit a special “OAKtober” table set up by the Northbrook Park District, which
will offer sample leaves and acorns, a chart of oak trees in Illinois, an acorn float demonstration and acorn-related giveaways. The month of October is Oak Awareness Month in Illinois.

A drum circle and pumpkin chucking will take place at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, adjacent to the park.

A horse trolley will be provided by Sunshine Farm II, located in Caledonia, Illinois. The  trolley, which is wheelchair accessible, will be drawn by two draft horses and will carry groups of 25 to 35 people around the park.

Children ages 10 and under can enjoy these field games, with ribbons for the winners:

  • 1 to 2 p.m. Sack races
  • 2 to 3 p.m. Three-legged races
  • 3 to 4 p.m. Egg races
  • 4 to 5 p.m. Tug-of-war
