The Northfield Village Caucus has announced its slate of candidates for the April 2025 municipal elections, led by an incumbent trustee for village president.
The slate offers incumbent Trustee Tracey Mendrek for village president. Mendrek, the chief financial officer and strategist of a Chicago-based crisis communications firm, has lived in Northfield since 1989. She was elected to the Village Board in 2021 and previously served on the village’s plan and zoning commission.
“As the next village president, I pledge to bring people together to work on behalf of all residents of Northfield,” Mendrek said in a statement. “Having served this wonderful community over the past three decades, being slated as president by the Caucus is a penultimate honor. I believe it is an endorsement of my record of consensus building with my colleagues and I look forward to leading Northfield and making our community stronger.”
Caucus Chairwoman Beverly Smith said there were “multiple” applicants to the Caucus seeking its endorsement for the village presidency. She did not disclose why the group selected Mendrek.
In an interview, Mendrek said a short term priority was a resolution to the concerns over the future of Happ Road. Northfield residents will vote Nov. 5 on a non-binding referendum regarding construction of a traffic roundabout at Happ Road and Orchard Lane.
Looking ahead, Mendrek said other important matters included safety, infrastructure, the village maintaining its Triple A bond rating, supporting local businesses and cultivating a strong sales tax base.
If elected, Mendrek will succeed Greg Lungmus, who decided not to seek a second term as village president.
The Caucus also slated incumbent Trustee Matthew Galin for another term along with Edwin Elfmann and Andrew Juedes, who are seeking to join the village board.
