An 18-year-old Oak Lawn man died of multiple gunshot wounds after a shooting Sunday near the Illinois State University campus, according to authorities.
Randall Glass died at an area hospital and police are investigating the shooting of him and another 18-year-old man.
Neither man who was shot were affiliated with the university, according to ISU police.
The shooting took place during the university’s homecoming weekend and appeared to have been related to a large “pop-up party” of more than 1,000 people, campus police said.
ISU and Normal police said they responded at about 3:40 a.m. Sunday to the area of the 300 block of North Main Street, dispersing a large party.
While on scene, officers heard several gunshots coming from the area and responded to the 300 block of North University and located two people who had been struck by gunfire.
Officers rendered aid until Normal Fire Department personnel arrived on scene, police said.
Both wounded people were transported to local hospitals where one of the victims was pronounced deceased. Police said the other man remains in critical condition.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and that state police are involved along with ISU police.
University police said the “pop-up” party was not organized or sanctioned by the university and started in a park and moved to a gas station.
The location of the shots was northeast of campus, near the Bone Student Center.
“Celebration in the form of large ‘pop-up parties’ on public property without a permit or on the property of non-consenting businesses is unacceptable and damages public and private property, disrupts local businesses and residential neighborhoods, and consumes significant” resources,” ISU police said.
