Officer hit in face breaking up fight on South Side near 63rd Street Beach

An officer conducting traffic control in the 1600 block of East Hayes Drive was injured when he tried to break up a fight between two groups, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., the officer was conducting traffic control in the 1600 block of East Hayes Drive in the Jackson Park neighborhood when he tried to separate a fight between two groups and was struck to the face, police said.

The officer suffered a contusion to the left side of the face and abrasions to the body. The officer refused medical help at the scene.

No one was in custody and detectives were investigating.
