Officer injured, suspect pronounced dead in police-involved shooting in Humboldt Park

A gunman was pronounced dead Thursday night after he was wounded during a struggle with a Chicago police officer and his gun discharged in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, officials said.

Shortly after 10:35 p.m., officers on patrol in the 4300 block of West North Avenue attempted to stop a male suspect in an alley. As they approached the suspect, he fled on foot into a backyard. A chase ensued followed by a struggle, Chicago police reported. During the struggle, the suspects weapon discharged, striking an officer, police said. An officer opened fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An officer who was struck to a leg, was taken to a local hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

A weapon was recovered from the scene.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating.
