One dead after Pleasant Township crash Monday

A motorcyclist died Monday afternoon in Pleasant Township at the scene of a crash with a dump truck, police said, adding the investigation into the wreck is ongoing.

The Porter County Coroner’s Office expects to release identification of the motorcyclist after an autopsy on Wednesday, according to that office.

Deputies with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department were called around 3:51 p.m. on June 24 about a report of a crash between a dump truck and a motorcycle on Indiana 8 at Baums Bridge Road, according to a release from Sgt. Ben McFalls, public information officer with that department.

An initial investigation and a witness statement show the motorcycle was traveling east on Indiana 8 and the dump truck was traveling west on Indiana 8, both approaching the intersection with Baums Bridge Road.

The dump truck driver told police he went left of center to avoid rear-ending an unknown sport utility vehicle that failed to yield and entered his lane of travel on Indiana 8. The SUV entered the dump truck’s lane after turning off of Baums Bridge Road, police said.

When the truck entered the eastbound lanes, it struck the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Porter County Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating.
