An Orland Park man was ordered detained Wednesday after being charged in connection with a shooting Sunday in Oak Forest that left one man dead and others wounded, according to authorities.
Omar Zegar, 37, is charged with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to Oak Forest police and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. He is next due to be in court May 17.
Court filings show Zegar was armed with a rifle and fired more than 20 times in the direction of several people outside a home in the 5500 block of Babette Court.
He was later stopped by police and taken into custody, and a 19-year-old woman in the vehicle he was in, in which police found a rifle, had suffered a gunshot wound, according to police and court filings.
The shooting Sunday in the 5500 block of Babette Court resulted in the death of an Oak Forest man, 39-year-old Mohannad Othman, of the 15700 block of Peggy Lane, who died just before 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Othman suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and his death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy, according to the office.
A 12-year-old girl who was shot standing in a nearby driveway was hospitalized, and a 19-year-old woman shot in the leg was being treated at a hospital, Oak Forest police said Monday.
Court filings show Zegar, of the 8900 block of Clearview Drive, had a pending domestic battery case involving the wife of his three children.
The mother of the children was not present at the Oak Forest shooting and was not the woman found injured in the car, according to court filings.
Police said they responded just after 5 p.m. Sunday to the Oak Forest address for a report of shots fired.
A third person, identified as a 19-year-old man, was treated at the hospital and later released, police said.
While at the shooting scene, officers learned a vehicle may have been involved in the shooting, and the vehicle was stopped a short time later, police said.
