Oswego looks at proposed development including grocery store, possible restaurant

The Oswego Village Board Tuesday night will consider an ordinance to allow for two new commercial buildings including a grocery store at the southeast corner of Route 34 and Kendall Point Drive in the village.

Benderson Development Company, LLC is seeking approval to build a grocery store and a retail store or restaurant on a five-acre parcel at the corner near the Delta Sonic car wash and gas station that was approved about five years ago.

The property was rezoned to a regional business district to permit uses for a grocery store, retail, restaurant and financial institutions, Oswego Assistant Development Services Director Rachel Riemenschneider said in a report to trustees.

“The developer has submitted plans for a 12,500-square-foot grocery store in the northeast corner of the site,” Riemenschneider said.

On the western side of the lot would be a 10,000-square-foot retail/restaurant building, she said.

The applicant has indicated it may be used for a restaurant and a 3,333-square-foot bank, including a drive-thru.

“Staff has requested clarification on whether the drive-thru is intended for the restaurant or bank,” Riemenschneider said in her report.

As for the proposed grocery store, the plans “show a variety of high-quality materials, including brick, cultured stone and stucco. The storefront entrance is at the southwest corner of the building and is covered with metal awnings,” Riemenschneider said.

Village staff has recommended approval of the ordinance for the final planned unit development for the two proposed commercial buildings.
