Oswego man killed in Montgomery crash

An Oswego man was killed in a crash on Wednesday involving a car and a semi-truck in Montgomery, officials said.

At approximately 5:17 p.m. Wednesday, the Montgomery Police Department and Oswego Fire Department responded to a crash at Route 31 and Caterpillar Drive, Montgomery police said in a press release Thursday.

The crash involved a black Nissan sedan, which struck a semi-truck at the intersection, according to the release.

Upon arrival, officers found the car pinned underneath the semi-truck, officials said. The driver of the car, Jason Messick, of the 400 block of Beaver Court in Oswego, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Illinois State Police responded to the scene, and the roadway in the area remained closed for several hours while team members conducted an investigation, officials said.

Preliminary findings indicate that the car was traveling southbound on Route 31, according to the release. The semi-truck, which was traveling northbound on Route 31, was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Caterpillar Drive when the crash occurred, officials said.

The driver of the car attempted to stop but was unable to avoid the collision, according to the release.

“Our hearts are with Mr. Messick’s family and loved ones as they navigate this heartbreaking loss,” said Montgomery Police Chief Phil Smith in the release. “I would like to thank all of the responding agencies and departments for their assistance and support with this incident.”

The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police, the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Montgomery Police Department. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Montgomery Police Det. Lindholm at 331-212-9050 or by email at llindholm@ci.montgomery.il.us.
