A pedestrian was struck and apparently killed by an Amtrak train Tuesday morning north of Glenview, the rail agency said.
Information about the victim was not immediately available, though Amtrak released a statement saying the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene, which would indicate the victim was killed.
An Amtrak spokesman referred questions to the medical examiner’s office, which could not immediately be reached for comment.
The train originated in Milwaukee and was headed to Chicago when it hit the pedestrian at about 9:30 a.m. The person was on the tracks about five miles north of Glenview, Amtrak said.
The rail agency said police and fire personnel responded to the scene, as well as the medical examiner’s office.
The train was released to continue after a two-hour, 18-minute delay. None of the 158 passengers or crew were hurt, Amtrak said. Commuter rail activity in the area was also affected, Metra said.
In a statement, Amtrak said rail trespassing incidents are the second-leading cause of rail-related deaths.
“These incidents can affect everyone involved — those who are injured or die and their families, our train crews, and our passengers,” Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said in an email. “They also serve as critical reminders about the importance of obeying the law and of exercising extreme caution around railroad tracks and crossings.”
