The driver in a fatal wreck on May 10 likely suffered from a medical issue before crashing his pickup in Washington Township, police said Tuesday.
The driver, Gary Liggett, 65, of Westville, was pronounced dead at Northwest Health – Porter’s emergency room after driving off a county road and into construction material, according to a crash report from the Porter County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies with the Porter County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched around 12:16 p.m. on Friday to a single-vehicle crash at a residence on County Road 325 East, south of County Road 500 North, police have said.
An initial investigation showed a 2019 Honda pickup truck was traveling northbound on County Road 325 East.
According to the crash report, it appeared Liggett “had an unknown medical issue and ran off the east side of the roadway.” The pickup truck continued northbound through the field and onto property in the 400 block of County Road 325 East.
Liggett’s vehicle “struck a pile of beams/rafters for a pole barn that were on the ground” and ran over them before coming to a halt in front of the residence on the property.
Police said on the crash report that Liggett ran off the roadway at around 11:13 a.m. and was not located until the property owners saw the pickup truck on their property on their Ring camera.
The chief of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department said when he arrived, “the vehicle was still running and (Liggett) still had his seatbelt on.” Liggett was the only person in the car.
Medics from Northwest Health-Porter and the fire department assisted at the scene.
