The police departments of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles are joining forces to encourage traffic safety during the week leading up to Memorial Day, the departments announced on Thursday.
From May 20 to 27, police from the three cities will focus enforcement efforts on heavily-traveled roadways, such as Randall Road, Route 31, Route 25 and Kirk Road, according to a news release from the city of Geneva.
“With the weather seemingly improving and more people getting out to enjoy it, police in the Tri-Cities are looking to ensure the safety of all motorists through enhanced enforcement,” officials said in the release. “The goal of this initiative is to reduce traffic crashes and ensure everyone travels safely, so we all can enjoy the week leading up to the unofficial start of summer.”
During the initiative, police will aim to reduce traffic crashes, educate motorists and enforce traffic laws related to speed, distracted driving, seat belts, driving under the influence and Scott’s Law, according to the release.
Scott’s Law, also known as the move-over law, says that drivers must use caution when approaching emergency vehicles on the side of the road by changing lanes if they can or reducing speed significantly if they cannot. Officials said that the law is named in memory of Lt. Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department, who was struck by a vehicle and killed in December 2000.
