An East Chicago Central High School student is in custody after providing students with laced gummies Tuesday.
Officers and medics were sent at around 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 3 to the high school for an overdose, a news release the department posted to its social media page said. Security officers told them that several students ate gummies “that were laced with an unknown substance,” according to the release.
Three students were taken to St. Catherine Hospital — one by ambulance in the morning and two others by their parents later in the day — while several other students were released to their parents, the release said. Detectives took the student who allegedly provided the gummies to the Lake County Juvenile Center for possession of a controlled substance and dealing a controlled substance.
The investigation is ongoing. Parents with questions or concerns regarding the incident are asked to contact the School City of East Chicago, the release said.
