Police: Lake Station officer fatally shoots dog after it charges him

A Lake Station police officer on Tuesday shot and killed a dog after another dog in its pack attacked a delivery driver.

Officers at around 9:46 a.m. responded to the 3300 block of Liverpool Road on a call that a dog attacked the driver and damaged his car, according to a department release on social media.

The driver said the dog attacked him a block from where he was, according to the release.

The officers went to the 3600 block of Dione Street and saw several large dogs inside a short chain-link fenced yard, according to the release. Recognizing that the dogs were aggressive, the first officer told the residents from an adjacent roadway to secure the dogs.

One of the dogs fighting in the yard, however, jumped the fence and charged a second officer who stayed on the street, the release said. The officer then shot the dog to prevent it from attacking him or others.

The department conducted an internal review and determined the officer’s actions were justified, according to the release.
