A Highland man is in custody facing a murder charge after an altercation Monday evening in which another man was shot to death, according to Valparaiso Police.
The Porter County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Trayveon Triplett, 24, of Valparaiso. Autopsy results were pending Tuesday morning.
The Post-Tribune is not naming the suspect until he is formally charged.
Valparaiso Police were called around 7:30 p.m. June 2 to the 1900 block of Chicago Street for a report of a subject being shot, according to a release from Capt. Joe Hall, the department’s public information officer.
Police learned the suspect may have left the area or secured himself in a nearby apartment. They were directed to Triplett, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was confirmed deceased on the scene, police said.
Police continued an immediate search for the suspect and the Porter County Emergency Response Team responded to assist. The investigation confirmed the suspect had left the area and provided his potential location, police said.
Police located the Highland man, 24, in the 300 block of Indiana Avenue. He was taken into custody and transported to the Valparaiso Police Department as part of the investigation.
Police later transported the subject to Porter County Jail on charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The investigation is ongoing, police said, and asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the Valparaiso Police Department at 219-462-2135.
