Oak Park-River Forest High School in Oak Park was placed on a soft lockdown midday Wednesday after a student reportedly claimed to have a gun and intended to fire it in the school building, authorities stated in a village of Oak Park news release.
Officials said the claim turned out to be not credible.
According to the release, at around noon Wednesday, the Oak Park Police Department was notified by school officials that an unknown student claimed to have the weapon and was going to use it during the class period that was going at that same time.
“Oak Park Police Officers remained on standby near the school, but were not requested to enter the building. OPRF officials soon deemed that it was not a credible safety threat and lifted the lockdown,” the release states.
But soon after that all-clear, officers responded to the school on a call of shots fired.
“It was soon determined that this was not a bona fide situation,” according to the release.
Still, police closed off Lake Street and Scoville Avenue – near the school – in an effort to control access to the area, authorities stated in the release.
“However there are no perceived threats or danger in the area at this time,” according to the release.
School officials did not immediately respond to Pioneer Press requests for comment about the day’s events.
