Police respond to Glenbrook high schools after social media threat, missing person

Glenview police responded to a report of a “suspicious social media post” made by a Glenbrook South High School student on the morning of Feb. 6. In the afternoon of the same day, Northbrook police searched for a missing person outside of Glenbrook North High School.

According to Glenview police, the department and Glenbrook South’s administration identified the student who posted a threat to the high school within 15 minutes of the department being notified.

“There was no physical threat to the school,” said Glenbrook High School District 225’s Executive Director of Communications Carol Smith.

“We understand that any mention of a potential threat can be unsettling, and we want to reassure our community that all students are safe and their wellbeing is always our top priority,” Smith said.

“The school day proceeded without disruption,” she added.

Outside of Glenbrook North High School, Northbrook police searched for a missing person. Northbrook Police Department Community Relations Supervisor Richard Rash said the department was alerted by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office that a missing person had used a phone in the area.

Rash said the department did not locate the missing person, and were notified by the Sheriff’s Office that a second call was made by the missing person in another town.

During the search, Glenbrook North went on a suspended schedule for 30 minutes, according to Smith.

Rash said the school went on the suspended schedule out of routine protocol to conduct the search. The increased police presence in the area and the reaction to it could have made the search more difficult at the time, he said.
