Portage woman killed, Gary woman injured after head-on collision in Gary

A Portage woman is dead and a Gary woman injured after a head-on collision on Gary’s west side Monday evening.

Officers responded around 5:52 p.m. January 20 to a collision at 4th Avenue and Johnson Street in Gary, according to spokesman Cmdr. Jack Hamady in a release. The caller told dispatch that cars hit each other and one of the cars started smoking.

Officers discovered upon arrival two vehicles involved in a head-on collision, with both drivers trapped in their vehicles, Hamady said. The Gary Fire Department extricated them.

A 24-year-old woman from Gary was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus upon extrication. The second woman — Tiffany Lauren Nickels, 37, according to a Lake County Coroner’s Office release — was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Gary Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating.
