Fire crews from the National Park Service plan to conduct the 159-acre Miller Woods 1 prescribed fire on Thursday. Ignition should begin around 12:30 p.m., weather depending.
The burn unit is located west of Lake Street and immediately south of the Calumet Lagoon in Gary’s Miller neighborhood.
The Paul H. Douglas Trail leading north to Lake Michigan will not be accessible north of the abandoned railroad grade during the prescribed fire activity.
Updates will be posted on the Indiana Dunes National Park’s Facebook page.
The prescribed fire is one of eight that the National Park Service plans to conduct this spring. Approximately 1,534 acres are planned to be burned as part of the park’s natural resources and fuels management programs. The prescribed fires will occur through April 30 as appropriate weather conditions allow.
