Prosecutors reveal more details in 2022 Homewood homicide; suspect remains jailed

A Homewood man suffered eight gunshot wounds while sitting in his car outside his home in November 2022, allegedly shot at by two men armed with a rifle and handgun, a recent court filing shows.

Darion Duncan, 25, was sitting in his car outside his home in the 15700 block of Dixmoor Drive when he was shot multiple times by Ryan Carter-Young and Nicholas Matthews, according to authorities.

Carter-Young, 22, of the 1000 block of Markham Park Drive in Flossmoor, was arrested July 14 of last year following the arrest in April of Matthews, of the 15600 block of Madison Avenue in Dolton.

A total of 11 shots were fired at Duncan Nov. 27, 2022, with Carter-Young firing seven shots from a rifle and Matthews firing four shots from a 9mm handgun, according to the Jan. 26 court filing by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Carter-Young has been held at Cook County Jail since his arrest. Cook County Judge Geraldine D’Souza denied Jan. 26 a request from Carter-Young’s attorney, Frank Himel, asking that his client be released on electronic monitoring.

In the Jan. 16 request, Himel said Carter-Young would live with his mother at her Matteson home, which is where he was living when he was arrested.

Himel said Carter-Young, now 23, has no criminal history and said the defense has received little evidence from prosecutors regarding the case.

“It’s unfair to detain someone on a charge of first-degree murder and deprive them of the evidence against them for half a year,” Himel wrote in the motion.

D’Souza said Carter-Young remained too great of a threat to be released pending trial.

He is next due to appear in the Markham courthouse Feb. 27.

Matthews is also being held pending trial and his next court appearance in Markham is scheduled for March 1.

Homewood police said they responded at 1:30 a.m. to a report of shots fired in the 17500 block of Dixmoor Drive and found Duncan dead in his vehicle from multiple gunshot wounds, in what they said was a targeted attack.

Matthews was arrested April 27 by Homewood police.
