Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito will undergo surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday, Alex Cora confirmed to reporters following Monday’s game.
The right-hander, Boston’s lone starting pitching spend this offseason, visited Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, AL on Monday after being diagnosed with a partial tear of his UCL and flexor strain.
“We’ll know more when they go in,” Cora told reporters. “The type of surgery, we don’t know.”
Dugas and his team won’t determine a specific course of action until they open up the arm and evaluate the extent of the ligament damage, but all of the various surgical options – internal brace, Tommy John – essentially guarantee that Giolito will miss the entire upcoming season. The only question now is how much of 2025 he’ll lose, too.
The Sox signed Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million contract in early January, and expected him to be at or near the top of the rotation. Instead, the 29-year-old, who’d been so durable throughout his eight-year career, won’t be in this year’s rotation at all.
