Riverdale man charged in Hazel Crest gas station shooting that wounded woman

A Riverdale man has been charged after a Jan. 16 shooting at a Hazel Crest gas station that left a woman wounded, police said Wednesday.

Devontae Stokes, 30, of the 13900 block of South Edbrooke, is charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery and is being held in custody following a detention hearing, according to a news release.

Police said the woman was shot at about 3 p.m. Jan. 16 at a Citgo station at 175th Street and Kedzie Avenue while entering her vehicle, and a vehicle with three people inside fled the scene.

The woman was wounded in the leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

After hearing the 911 dispatch of the suspected offending vehicle, a Country Club Hills officer spotted it heading north on Pulaski Avenue.

The driver attempted to elude the officer, and the vehicle crashed into a school bus near 169th and Pulaski, police said.

The three suspects ran into a residential subdivision and officers from Country Club Hills and Flossmoor assisted Hazel Crest police in arresting the three suspects, Hazel Crest police said.

Two of the people were later released, police said.
