Drew Smyly returned to the Cubs’ starting rotation Tuesday with the hope two weeks of relative rest working out of the bullpen would fix his struggles as a starter. Instead, Smyly picked up where he left off, allowing 7 earned runs in less than 4 innings in an 8-6 loss in Detroit.
